Is Getting a Tat Dedicated to your Significant Other a Bad Idea?
Till death do us part. Well, that is the plan at least. A current statistic shows that 50% of marriage ends in divorce or separation. So, when you’re considering getting a tattoo dedicated to your significant other do you consider the 50% risk factor involved? What do you do if things go south in the relationship post inkage? (We’re still trying to make that a word!)
We’ve seen plenty of celebrities get beautiful tattoos in ode to their loved ones. David Beckham has numerous tats in reference to Victoria Beckham and she has tats dedicated to him as well. (But they will NEVER get divorced, so they don’t really count I guess.) Even a Jo Bro, (Jonas Brother) Kevin got a tattoo of the outline of his wife in her iconic dress in their “Sucker” music video. Marco and Zoe Saldana have each other’s face tattooed on themselves. Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day has the cutest tat photo strip of his wife Adrienne. These relationships and tattoos have stood the test of time and marriage, but what happens when you break up??
More often than not a celebrity relationship ends in a break. That percentage HAS to be higher than 50%. We’re still bitter about Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, but we won’t go there. Every time you turn on E! News or open a People magazine there is a new relationship, a new affair, a new hairdo or “The Worst Breakup You’ve Ever Seen” (so dramatic...)
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson are both in the process of covering up their numerous tattoos they got for each other. Justin Bieber still has an angel on his forearm that is supposed to be Selena Gomez! (Wonder what Hailey Baldwin has to say about that?) Kat Von D got a childhood picture of Jesse James on her, which ended in an expensive laser removal. Zayn Malik had an illustration of Perrie Edwards, which ended up turning into some new creation when Gigi Hadid came along. Apparently, he didn’t learn his lesson and got Gigi Hadid’s eyes tattooed on his chest... which also ended in a breakup. Probably the most recent break up is Miley Cyrus who still has a can of Vegemite on her arm for Liam Hemsworth.
So, we have to ask ourselves is it worth getting a tattoo dedicated to a significant other? We can see both sides. It’s quite romantic if the relationship lasts and it’s a pain in the ass (sometimes literally) if it ends. I would say that with the magic a tattoo artist can do these days to cover up past ink, why not get a tattoo of your loved one? Or, there is always laser removal (like Von D.) I would say maybe wait a few more months than Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande... maybe even wait till after the wedding.
In conclusion if Beyoncé and Jay-Z do it, it’s probably a good idea.
