When Scars Become Art

When Scars Become Art

Everybody has a scar or two. If you were a teenage girl, I can almost guarantee you have one from your first leg shaving experience. And if you were a teenage boy I can almost guarantee you have one from doing some stupid trick on a bike or skateboard. Ugh, kids. Plenty of people accept these marks as pieces to their life story. We too are firm believers that scars can be beautiful!

“And our scars remind us that the past is real.” Papa Roach, anyone?!

The sad truth is some people’s scars are so noticeable they worry that’s the first thing people will look at, not to mention might be a giant reminder to a painful past. Unfortunately, there really isn’t many options other than scar cream, but we’ve seen some ingenious tattoo artists turning scars into artwork.

This is creativity at its finest! Check out some of these clever scar-covering tattoos.

This is a great example of how to disguise your scar without directly tattooing on top of it. A lot of people could benefit from this tactic. If you're not in the market for a UFO beam, perhaps the scar could be a burst of water, or a ladder or rope!

Here’s an example of someone who embraced their mark but enhanced it with a comical scenario of red wine spilling. Not sure if the customer or artist conceptualized this, but BRAVO to that individual. Obsessed.

We can’t get over how simple this one is! A few black marks for eyes and a mouth and a text bubble. It’s like looking for shapes in the clouds. This is one we would definitely mimic. Halloween is life. Disagree with us and get off this blog.

Perhaps the cutest scar coverup we’ve seen is this little Darth Vader with his lightsaber. George Lucas would be honored.

This one is REALLY creative. The tattoo artist made a scar appear to be a shadow! We love when tattoos can trick the eye, so the incorporation of a scar is just beyond brilliant.

What to know before getting a tattoo on or near your scar:

We asked a tattoo artist for the inside scoop of tatting scars, and learned your scar must be at least a year old before tattooing. The artist said it can be a bit harder to tattoo, and there’s a chance it can blow out and not hold ink. Since it is scar tissue, that skin wants to push stuff out.

Don’t let any of this info deter you! Everybody is different. Skin and scars are different. Just use this knowledge to discuss with your tattoo artist what’s best for you. The good news is it's no more painful than inking regular skin, which we were very curious about.

Our other piece of advice: treat this tatted scar with our OCD maintenance kit! Everything from daytime protection lotion (SPF), brightening cleanser, and nighttime enhancing lotion. Keep your skin AND your ink happy.

xx,
